How To Buy - Sell - Register A Snowmobile

Seller - Needs to Sign over the registration by completing the Transfer section of the registration, provide a "Bill Of Sale" and complete sellers portion of Sales Tax form DTF-802.

Buyer - Complete the snowmobile registration application MV-82SN. Complete Sales Tax form DTF-802 or provide proof of exception or tax paid (see Forms page for additional tax situations and forms). Show proof of ownership and "Bill Of Sale". Nonresidents may use photocopies of proof of ownership and are not required to pay NY sales tax if the snowmobile is registered in another state. Show proof of identification. Pay registration fee ($25 annually for NY residents, $35 annually for non-residents, checks payable to "Commissioner of Motor Vehicles").

Snowmobiles - purchased from a dealer 

The acceptable proof of ownership is the Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin, or the Manufacturer's Statement of Origin, or the registration of the previous owner that is signed and transferred to the dealer, and a dealer's bill of sale on company letterhead. 

Snowmobiles - previously registered and purchased from an individual 

The acceptable proof of ownership is a snowmobile bill of sale and a NYS registration transferred to you. The person whose name appears on the proof of ownership must sign the transfer section of the proof of ownership. An acceptable snowmobile bill of sale includes all of this information your name and your mailing address, the year and make of the snowmobile, the model name, model number, color, and CC/HP of the snowmobile, the snowmobile identification number, the purchase price, and the signature of the seller. 

Snowmobiles - never registered and purchased from an individual 

The acceptable proof of ownership is: the Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin or Manufacturer's Statement of Origin, the dealer's bill of sale given to the original owner, the sales tax receipts from all other transfers, and a snowmobile bill of sale (as described above).

Bill Of Sale

If you buy a snowmobile from another person who is not a DMV-licensed automobile dealer, make sure that you receive acceptable proof of ownership. 

Bill of Sale: Proof of ownership normally includes a bill of sale. The DMV does not provide a form for a bill of sale. The seller and the buyer complete the bill of sale. An acceptable bill of sale includes all of this information: 

The year and make of the vehicle

The vehicle identification number (VIN) 

The date of the sale, 

The purchase price of the vehicle

The names and signatures of the buyer and the seller. 

The buyer and seller can make photocopies of the bill of sale to keep in their records. The new owner must give the original bill of sale to the DMV with the other acceptable proofs of ownership required. A bill of sale is not an acceptable proof of ownership without other proofs.

Requirements for Proof of Identity and Date of Birth - With the increase in requirements for public security, the DMV frequently updates the list of acceptable proofs of identity and date of birth. Carefully read the requirements described on the pages below. Make sure that you have the proofs required for any DMV transaction before you apply.

Statement of Transaction {Sales Tax Form} Sale or Gift of Motor Vehicle, ATV, Vessel (Boat) or Snowmobile DTF-802 - Use this form to certify sale price for sales tax calculation when vehicle, vessel, etc. is transferred in a casual sale or as a gift.

Claim for Sales Tax Exemption - Title/Registration Motor Vehicle, ATV, Vessel (Boat) or Snowmobile DTF-803 - Use when you are claiming exemption from sales tax for any reason other than a gift (then use DTF-802) or credit for taxes paid to other states (then use DTF-804).

Claim for Credit of Sales Tax Paid to Another State ( For Motor Vehicle, ATV, Vessel (Boat) or Snowmobile) DTF-804 - Used when a New York resident purchases a vehicle out-of-state, registers the vehicle in New York State and applies for credit for the sales tax paid in the other state.

Affidavit of Sale or Transfer MV-51 - Use to certify ownership and to transfer a non-titled vehicle which was never registered by the current owner. May not be used by auto dealers and must be accompanied by other proofs of ownership.

Statement of Ownership MV-51B - Use to certify ownership of a non-titled vehicle, vessel or snowmobile and to certify why proof of ownership in not available. Must be accompanied by other documents listed on the form.

Snowmobile Registration Application MV-82SN - Use to register snowmobiles, renew snowmobile registration, amend or request duplicate registration . All snowmobile registrations expire August 31. Also download instruction form MV-82.1SN (below).

Change of Address MV-232 - Use to send your change of address for your license, non-driver ID and registrations. You may also order a new license or ID with your new address.

Affidavit for Transfer of Snowmobile/Boat/Trailer MV-349.2 - Use to transfer a snowmobile, boat or trailer with a value of $15,000 or less to the surviving spouse or minor child of a deceased owner, or to another person for the benefit of a surviving spouse or child.
